Heraklion: Door by Door: Thresholds Between Street and Home

I started to notice doors when I was walking around without a purpose. Not landmarks, not façades, not the way the street moves, but the places where movement stops. There were doors that separated public noise from private silence. Some had just been painted, while others had been worn smooth by years of hands. A lot of them were closed. Some were open just enough to make it seem like life went on outside the frame.Doors in Heraklion show signs of many lives that have come together in one city. They are facing the street with restraint. They reveal little, yet they speak through material, colour, repair, neglect, care. Each one marks a line that is crossed every day and not thought about very often: the moment when someone leaves the world and enters their own. Taking pictures of these thresholds was a way to see how a city can be intimate without showing it.This book isn't a list of buildings or an attempt to record a neighbourhood.
