Native to southern Brazil the Jaboticaba, pronounced in five (5) syllables just as it is spelled, is a member of the Myrtle family and relative of the Guava. The botanical name "Cauliflora" means that it flowers and bears fruit on the trunk and mature branches. During it's flowering period the tree is covered in clusters of small white flowers all over the trunk and branches. Bonsai is the reproduction of natural tree forms in miniature. This art form has its origin in Japan and China where it has been practiced for centuries. Bonsai are grown in pots and are totally dependent on you for their care. The Jaboticaba will thrive indoors in high light and appreciates being kept outdoors during the spring and summer. When night time temperatures drop below 45 degrees we suggest that you place the tree on a windowsill or on a table in front of one. Once nightly lows begin approaching the 40 degree mark, it is time to bring your indoor bonsai inside. The ideal indoor location is on a window sill facing south, an east or west exposure is second best. A northern exposure will work, but will necessitate the use of sufficient light. Minimum 4-6 hours of sunlight per day should suffice.
