Introducing the Annapolis Argonauts!

In the 2013/14 school year, Annapolis is launching its first Robotics Club. The Robotics Club is an after-school, extra-curricular club for students in the School of Logic, grades 7 and 8. These young ladies and gentlemen will be the Annapolis Argonauts!

About FIRST® LEGO® League

FIRST® LEGO® League (FLL) is a partnership between FIRST® and LEGO®. FLL has hosted annual robotics competitions since 1998. In the competition, student teams like the Annapolis Argonauts must meet and overcome a Challenge.

The Challenge

The Challenge is comprised of three elements. During the competition, teams are scored on all three components of the Challenge.

I. The Robot Game

The Robot Game takes place on a large mat, like a playing board, where the team’s robot must interact with multiple obstacles of varying type and difficulty, all built out of LEGOs. Successful attempts garner points, and the team has two and a half minutes to rack up as many points as possible. All of the obstacles are based on a particular theme. This year’s theme is Nature’s Fury.

II. The Project

For the Project, students research and design a solution (or modify an existing solution) to solve a real-world problem related to that year’s theme. Why include a research project in a robotics competition?

III. The Core Values

Not so much what a team does as how a team does it, the FLL Core Values are the cornerstones of the FLL program. They are among the fundamental elements that distinguish FLL from other programs of its kind. By embracing the Core Values of FLL, participants learn that friendly competition and mutual gain are not separate goals, and that helping one another is the foundation of teamwork.
