As we have talked about God’s promises to us, we have talked about big and important promises. We have talked about the promise of God’s love, forgiveness, and that He will always be with us. All of these promises are very important for our lives and eternity. Today we are looking at something that is almost a secondary promise, but this promise is just as important. Philippians 4:19 says, “And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus.”
Why is this a secondary promise? It really isn’t secondary at all, but think about all God has promised us.
- He has promised to love us!
- He has promised to forgive us!
- He has promised eternal life to us!
- He has promised to be with us forever!
Not only does the Creator of all things love us, forgive us, give us eternal life, and will never leave us, He also says He will meet all of our needs, too! Let’s think about it a little more.
We were created by God and He loves us so much, He forgives us even when we are mean to Him or when we wrong Him! He allows us to live with Him forever even when we shouldn’t be able to; He has made a way! And He won’t leave us even when we get lost; He won’t leave us! Not only does He do all of that, but he also says any needs you have will be met! And if that isn’t enough, He will meet our needs according to His riches in Glory in Christ Jesus.
Let me get this straight…He not only made us, loves us, forgive us, saves us, protects us, is with us, and will never leave us… He will give us what we need?
Who has needs here today? I have many needs for my family, and friends, for this school and community, for this nation and world. There are many needs and it almost feels foolish to ask God to help when He has already done everything for us.
This reminds me of my father. One day I asked him to get my wallet from my house because I forgot and left it at home and I needed it for the day. Anyone do that before? Have you ever forgotten something at home and had a parent bring it to you?
My dad stopped what he was doing and went to my house to pick it up. At the house he saw that the back yard fence was breaking, so he fixed it. He then came to school and dropped my wallet off. I told him thank you and said that because of all that he had done, I wanted to take him out to eat after school. He said he would meet me there.
After school, I ran to meet him at our favorite restaurant. He ordered something and I ordered a lot of food because I am hungry after school. When I reached for my wallet to pay for the meal, it wasn’t there. I had left it at school!
Not only did my dad have to get my wallet from home, he fixed my fence, brought me my wallet, and then he had to pay for his own thank you meal! It almost felt wrong to ask my dad to pay for the meal that I asked him to come eat with me, but he laughed and said it was ok; he would pay.
In the same way, not only did God create you, He loves you, He forgives you, and He is with you, but He also gives us all we need! But the point of it all is to get to an understanding that He is all we need!
He is our need. He is what we require to live and move and have our being! He is everything we need! So we can go to God and ask him to supply our needs for what we have to have. But remember, He is the answer to our needs as well! Let us remember that as we face this day and find we have pressing needs before us. He has promised to meet our needs according to His riches and glory in Christ Jesus!
